Add/ Remove Carts While Plugged In
« on: 08/Apr/2013 11:54:50 AM »
Sorry if this is a simple/ noob question, but I've been over and over the manual and can't seem to find the answer. Will it damage the Retrode/carts as all if I connect or remove carts from it while the Retrode is attached to the computer via the USB? I ask because I assume that while it's connected the Retrode is "on" so it's basically like having a turned on console, and  those shouldn't have cards added/ removed while powered on.

Again, sorry if this is a simple question but I don't want to damage any of my gear.  ;D

What I tend to do is:

1.) remove the device safely
2.) Disconnect the USB from the Retrode
3.) Swap games
4.) Reattach the Usb

I might be over cautious but it's less risk of damage of both cartridge and the retrode.

We recommend going the safe route, because it is not 100% possible to rule out damage being caused by hot-plugging. On the other hand, I have been hot-plugging carts since the very beginning, and to this day not managed to destroy a cartridge nor a Retrode.

If you do hot-plug any carts, just make sure the access light isn't flashing.

Seconded. With the access light on, any plugging activity would in fact be potentially dangerous, at least to SRAM. The Retrode finishes all read/write accesses with a sequence that disables the cartridge interface, in an effort to make removal safer.

I have no luck with the hotswapping. Well, the Retrode 2 (latest 0.18calpha4) does recognize the swap, but it also always seems to be reset the usb connection. Folder closes and it takes about 5-10s for it to be accessible again. Interestingly, this doesn't happen 100% of the time, but with SNES/MD it happens most (about 90-95%). With the GBx plugin it works every second time I'd say. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm not using a USB hub.
