General Discussion / Re: Retron 5 Adapter in Retrode?
« on: 10/Sep/2017 07:44:04 PM »
If we solder the game gear slot onto the Master System adapter would we need to modify the shell you provided? Or would you recommend just taking shell off?

you can either cut a hole in the shell for it or you can leave the shell off, the other option is to buy a replacement megadrive (genesis) cartridge or a dirt cheap game and use that case to cut up so you can still keep the original case.

im waiting for a broken game gear i ordered to come and i will remove the connector and add it to my master system plugin and post a pic once its done.

Would the adapter you designed be able to dump Turbografx games as well as PC Engine games? I believe the pinouts are slightly different based on the region.

from what i could see its just the data pins thats reversed so instead of data 0 to data 0 its data 0 to data 7 so you should be able too but of course it all needs testing.

ive redesigned it with dip switches this is what it looks like now:

when you turn all of the TG16 dips on you turn the PC Engine dips all off and vice versa.

i know the dips are in the way of the cart pins atm but this is all just a design right now.

> @hadess whats wrong with just using that markiii to megadrive converter with the retrode? The schematic looks pretty straight forward so it should work.

Well, because it didn't work ;)

I should probably have added this information in my first post, but I had been putting off posting for so long, that I didn't even think to try and explain why I went down this path.

I have 2 cartridges that work out of the box with the adapter on my Megadrive II PAL:
- Enduro Racer (Mark III)
- Alex Kidd In Miracle World (Mark III)

Those 3 games will not boot without stack init. A trick that's mentioned on the Raphnet page is to swap a working cartridge quickly with a non-working one, while powered off. Another way, which I wouldn't recommend but works is to start the Megadrive with the adapter but not the cartridge, insert the cartridge and press Reset. Anyhoo, the 3 games:
- Alex Kidd BMX Trial (Mark III)
- Space Harrier 3D (Mark III/SMS)
- Opa Opa (Mark III/SMS)

All 5 of those are detected as 4 megs "GenericRomInSegaSlot.dat" dumps. Dumping the ROMs ends up in garbage.

There's a few active components on the Mark III/SMD adapter, where the Retrode SMS adapter has none.

Hope that clears any doubts about the reason why I'm asking ;)

(and if you want to share your pinout for the card reader, probably in a separate thread, it'd be appreciated!)

i recreated the markiii to smd in eagle and stripped it down a touch, the resistors on it are just 0 ohm so i could just bridge the connections:

i will have to check it out sometime but currently i dont have any mark iii cartridges or console which sucks also i did have another thread for my sega card to master system adapter on here but i want to order some proper boards for it before i post everything and currently to get the sega card edge connector you have to remove it from a master system model 1 or something so that sucks.

So apparently the Retron guys released an adapter for the Retron 5 that plugs into the Genesis slot and allows the playing of SMS and GG carts, and also SMS cards. I realize that we already have an SMS adapter, but might it be a relatively easy task to update the Retrode firmware to recognize this adapter and allow the reading of GG carts and SMS cards as well? Just a thought...

Thanks all.
The master system plugin already has the holes on it for a game gear connector you simply need to solder it on for anyone who wanted to know.

heres a render of a board ive designed but until i get the pc engine game i ordered i cant say for certain the connector pins are the right size etc but its a start.

i will change it up as i go, for example i will probs change the bridge points for something like dip switches so you can change back and forth.

i was thinking of making them but im not sure how i would get the cartridge connector since the consoles are so expensive.

i made this awhile back, it allows me to play sega cards on the master system model 2, play sega cards on the game gear with a master gear converter as well as dump sega cards on my retrode using a master system plugin.

although ive never tried im guessing it will also do SG-1000 cards too.

@hadess whats wrong with just using that markiii to megadrive converter with the retrode? The schematic looks pretty straight forward so it should work.

i would have to test it again and see if it works i also have more plugins so i suppose i would also add them too, when i get some free time i will take a look.
Thank's for that. Would you like me to update the post on the official Retropie forum about this or would you like to post it yourself. I'm sure they would love any additional flexibility & knowledge to be added to their site. Do you think you'll add your code to Github?

What about the RetroPi that they are going to come out with? Someone must have already figured all of this out. It's all open source and the future kickstarter & leaflet says that current owners can also make use of this. Can the plugins for RetroPie be released or have they not been created yet?

i havent really been keeping up with retropie but very soon im going to make a retropie portable using my raspberry pi zero once ive done that i will install my script and see if it still works then add support for all of my plugins if i can and then i will release it for ppl to try.

as for the controllers im not sure because i have a retrode 1 but when it comes to using the retrode with retropie i wrote a script awhile ago which allows you to launch games directly from the retrode and it copies the save with it then allows you to copy the save back if i remember let me see if i can find it, it may come in handy.

Wow, Brilliant! :D Any chance you can add this to Github like this person did with instructions like that person made? That way we can ask them to add a Wiki Page about the Retrode on RetroPie and how to add it :)

Is this compatible with the current RetroPie 3.8.1?

Of course there should be a way for it to also show 4 remotes. Any idea on how to do this? What about the Hot Swapping issue that the manual warns about?

im not sure i havent messed with retropie for quite some time but im pretty sure it should still work as for the controllers im not sure i believe the retrode acts like a usb hub so the controllers should work you may have to map the controls with one in at a time im not sure

if you got plenty of space you could download vmware and install windows vista or windows 7 on it and try that

I cleaned them thoroughly, but instead of getting the file name from before, I'm getting names such as "Superdmermod.A" from Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 and "Pokemondsept" from Pokemon Sapphire. When I try to run them in an emulator, nothing happens. I'll continue to clean them but the Game Boy plugin seems much more sensetive than the SNES or Genesis slots on the Retrode or my N64 Plugin. EDIT: Now I'm getting "Pokemonsept.A" from Pokemon Sapphire. Does the ".A" mean anything?

i remember one of my games for the megadrive wouldnt dump correctly, it turned out it wasnt dumping it as the correct file size so i would recommend downloading the rom to get the correct file size unless you know and comparing with the one you get from the retrode.

also are the games your trying to dump legit, fakes, clones or homebrew ones?

ah normally in that situation you have to go into your emulators settings and make sure its saving it as the correct type for example eeprom and also the correct size atleast thats what i remember having to do for super mario all stars on the snes
