Title: SNES Controller issues? Update your firmware.
Post by: Matthias_H on 20/Mar/2012 02:28:36 PM
The latest firmware contains an important fix for the SNES controller part. If you are experiencing problems, make sure to find it here, and install it according to instructions (http://www.retrode.org/firmware). Mac users, here are instructions for firmware update for you (http://forum.retrode.org/index.php/topic,53.0.html).

Please let us know if this solves your controller troubles. (On a different note, I can't seem to get my mouse to work at the moment. Will be fixed in a future update.)

Ok, this did not work for me.  I recently bought Retrode and tried to use it for the first time.  Everything works fine, except that the controllers don't work (original SNES controllers).  I have plugged it into a Mac with Snow Leopard (10.6) and a Win 7 (64) box.  I have updated the firmware to v0.17f.  Finally, we hooked the SNES console itself up to a TV and plugged the controllers into it.  The controllers worked fine attached to the original console.  Help.  Does it matter which emulator I use?

Sorry to hear about your trouble, let's see what we can do about it. It does matter which emulator you use, especially under unixoid systems such as Linux or Mac OS.

How exactly did you establish that the controllers "don't work"- did you configure the emulator to use them in the first place? (Because you have to).
Under Windows, does the game controller dialog in the Control Panel react to controller input? (The left SNES port should be the first USB controller in the list of four.)

Cheers,
Matthias

Ok, thank you for explaining that I had to configure the emulator.  While, in retrospect, that probably should of been obvious, in my defense, this is my first time using an emulator.  Currently,  I am using bsnes.  Are there any emulators that you would recommend for SNES.  Thanks.

Snes9x and ZSNES are both good and popular emulators, and I believe both are multi-platform (though ZSNES contains quite a bit of assembly so works only on x86 platforms - PCs and Macs essentially)

Thanks.  I'll give them a try.

Muzer's tutorial for Windows 7, ZSNES and Gens is now online! (http://www.retrode.org/tutorials/windows/) Thanks Muzer for the detailed documentation, and FelixV who edited it for the website.

Hi Neelix,

Indeed, v0.17f has a wrong version number embedded. I guess I'll add a note on the firmware page. Updating the firmware does not overwrite your config settings. Did you have [sramReadOnly] set to 0 before the update?

Cheers,
Matthias

Hi Matthias,

Yeah, but its always reverted to default whenever I've updated the firmware in the past.
So the "sudo dfu-programmer at90usb646 erase"  command doesn't clear the config?

Code: [Select]
sudo dfu-programmer at90usb646 eraseerases the firmware, not the settings file

The settings are in EEPROM, not in flash. So they should be retained when the firmware is updated.

Hi,

I just bought the Retrode, so I'm a total noob. Tried to play a game with original SNES-Controller, but it won't work. Already updated to 0.17g with no effect. If i push a button, the Retrode LED lits up, but it won't work in the game.

I tried with zsnesw151 and snes9x-1.53. Configuration seems OK for me (controller activated).

What do I miss?

Configuration seems OK for me (controller activated).

Are you referring to the RETRODE.CFG file, or controller configuration within the emulator? The tutorials section on retrode.org, http://www.retrode.org/tutorials/ (http://www.retrode.org/tutorials/), gives a few examples.

Silly me...

I didn't get that I have to press the buttons within emulator configuration. Now everything works perfect. Thank you, have a nice weekend!

My controller doesn't mapping correct in windows 8, and I can't play using snes9x.
my firmware if factory default to 17g.
I can't update the firmware because the flip driver doesn't work in windows 8 .

can you help me?
thanks

The FLip driver doen't work on windows 8.. but today I tried another computer with the windows 7 and it works, now it is updated to last firmware, I will test the controller again, and give my answer.

I mean, how did you come to the conclusion that the "controller doesn't mapping correct"?

Because the A and B when I press get the same mapping as Y  and X.  them L button too.
The B when I press work the same as the X button but like Turbo mode. but my controller is a simple snes retro-controller from "Hiperklin TOMECO" and I've tested two controllers and the two retrode ports and get the same problem, these controllers works well on 2 original consoles.

but with the buttons working overlayed as I say, it's impossible to play.
I do the firmware update to the last.. but nothing chances,  remembering that I use windows 8.

Which application do you use to test the mappings? What does Windows' Game Controller diagnosis/calibration dialog show?

I've tested on the windows Joystick config mapping  and on snes9x too, and I get the same problem.
When I press B button is mapping the same as A button conflicting as the same mapping!  but with blinking like turbo mod when I press it. , And when I press Y it mappings as the same  as X button conflicting the mapping too,  but the X and A works fine,  And the L button conflit with the Y too.

Maybe the 3rd party controller has slightly different protocol or timings. Does it work with original Nintendo controllers?
