Retrode no longer responds after firmware update.
« on: 11/Jul/2014 01:02:50 AM »
OS Windows 7 (PC) & Vista (Laptop; not mine)
Retrode Model 2 Mega Drive/Genesis, Super Famicom/SNES

Okay so attempted a 2nd time to install the firmware. First time failed on Windows 7 so I tried Vista. I've accomplished steps all steps through this guide.

http://forum.retrode.org/index.php?action=post;board=2.0

However, after resetting and un-plugging the Retrode. It now appears as unknown device in the device manager. This is on both operating systems. I tried updating the drivers, I re-installed USB 2.0, tried using entering DFU mode (hold HWB, push RESET, lift off RESET, let go of HWB) and the light won't even come on. It refused to show the Retrode folder with the CFG file. I tried putting a game in, nothing.

I don't know if this helps but during step 9 when it came time to press Ctrl+L. Even though I pushed & held repeatedly nothing happened. There was nothing in the "Open/Cancel" box, I hit "Open". Everything appeared normal so I hit "Run". Where did I go wrong. I've updated devices from the the XRGB-3, to the Framemeister, and Mega Ever Drive. I can see the Retrode is a different beast altogether. If I known it was this risky I would have left it alone. It worked well enough before the update attempt. All I wanted to do was support the retro gamers and inventors of this product which I admired while at the same time - backing up my collection. Please I don't want money and efforts to be wasted, someone help!

Have you got access to a Windows XP machine? XP, unfortunately, still is the most reliable way of updating Retrode's firmware.

In the device manager, instead of "updating" drivers, there should also be an option of "uninstalling" the device (hopefully causing Windows to forget all it knows about it).

Windows 7 offers the uninstall option in device manager. Didn't do anything when I tried it there... I'll seek out an XP computer and get back to you.

Okay, so I finally used an XP computer at my friends house. It told me my device is broken. :(

It appears there's nothing I can do. Looks like I'll need a replacement. Any chance you can update the firmware to the latest version for my replacement order?

I've actually found the Linux firmware update process to be pretty painless.

However useful that information is :)

Depends. There are still two modes of operation - regular and firmware update (DFU, the one you enter by doing the HWB procedure). Do you get the same error in firmware update mode?

Tried them both, the whole thing went south.
